VIRGINIA BLUE RIDGE AFFILIATE OPENS PROCESS FOR GRANT PROPOSALS
FOR EDUCATION, SCREENING, AND TREATMENT FOR BREAST CANCER PROGRAMS
Organization’s Community-Based Grants Dedicated to Filling Unmet Breast Health, Breast Cancer Needs
ROANOKE – October 1, 2011 – The Board of Directors for the Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate announces the Request for Proposals (“RFP”) application process for grants related to breast health are now being received.
The Komen Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate is part of the 125-member Affiliate network of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever. Local Affiliates serve as the face and voice of Komen’s global breast cancer movement, mobilizing millions of everyday people through activities like the Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer.
Applications will be accepted for screening, treatment, education and prevention programs related to breast health and cancer programs across our service area. The Virginia Blue Ridge
Affiliate service area includes 31 cities and counties in Virginia including Alleghany, Amherst, Bath, Bedford, Bland, Botetourt, City of Buena Vista, Campbell, Carroll, City of Covington, City of Danville, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, City of Galax, Giles,
Grayson, Henry, City of Lexington, City of Lynchburg, City of Martinsville, Montgomery, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Pulaski, City of Radford, Roanoke, City
of Roanoke, Rockbridge, City of Salem, and Wythe. Special consideration is given to applications proposing to serve the highest priority communities and population groups, as indicated by the recently completed Community Profile Report for the Affiliate (click here for more information).
The priority communities include the areas of City of Roanoke, Henry County, and Pittsylvania County. These three locales have lower screening rates, and correspondingly higher percentages of Stage III and IV cancers.
The Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate also seeks to support screening programs that target African American women in the entire service area, and programs that support and provide breast cancer education to women between the ages of 19-45.
Komen and its Affiliates are known globally for their dedication to filling existing gaps in breast health and breast cancer needs. To make sure they are addressing needs that no one else is meeting in their own service areas, Komen Affiliates work with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments. These community profiles are then used to establish local grant application and review processes consistent with Komen's promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
To obtain a copy of the application and learn more about the Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate, email Eileen Lepro at or visit the Grants Web Page.
About Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and the Komen Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and launched the global breast cancer movement. The Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate of Komen for the Cure is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancers in the local community by joining more than 1 million breast cancer survivors and activists around the globe as part of the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting breast cancer.
